Mechanical Slot Machines
Slot machines used to be nicknamed "the one-armed bandit" because the player had to pull a handle to get the reels spinning. A few hours of this and the player came away with "slot machine" shoulder! Today's slots are operated by a "spin" button, although the handle is still there if you should want to use it. Reel Slots
Slots reels were decorated with pictures or symbols. The first ones had mostly pictures of fruits, and a winning payout was made when three of the same fruit showed up in the center line. The 3-Reelers
3-reel slots are the most basic of all slots. Their displays show three lines of symbols and the payouts for each machine are always displayed either at the top, side or bottom of the machine face so that the player will understand what symbols must show and in what sequence in order to make a win.
The biggest win is when three of the same symbol show across the center line, but a win can also be made if one symbol shows in an up/down/up sequence over the three lines, on the diagonal, and sometimes when only two of the same show in the center reel.
Multi-line payouts require that the player bet the maximum number of coins in order to win, i.e. if the slot machine is a three-coin machine all three coins must be bet in order to win.
